Traveling to Oaxaca with Children
Alvin Starkman, MA, Bachelor of Laws
Oaxaca has traditionally been known as an adult destination, full of ruins, colonial churches, museums and a tradition of fine arts and crafts. But having been visiting the region regularly since 1991, always with our daughter, and now has been living here for several years and regularly toured friends and family with young children around the city and distant sites, without a doubt, young families contemplating a visit should set aside any lingering fears regarding both the welfare of their young offspring, and the ability of parents to have at least something of a romantic getaway.
Concerns may include asking whether there will be enough places to celebrate your child, if the reader will be able to visit the remains of pre-Hispanic civilizations without children are bored until death, if you will be able to sneak out for a meal on its own, if you're going to have to pay a premium to find a swimming pool --- guaranteed an afternoon of swimming --- is always the best wisdom of bribery and maybe just have a beach vacation and saving Oaxaca for another time when you can do without the family.
Having pondered these considerations from time to time, I can now offer valuable suggestions on where to stay, even without a swimming pool, which definitely runs visits take place the interests of children and adolescents, and what activities exist in and around the city on a regular basis, tailored to the young vacationers.
Housing, and swimming
Suburban Hotel San Felipe is a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of center ... outdoor pool in a picturesque setting and rural neighborhoods dotted with hills. Several friends have also enjoyed Holiday Inn Express, on the northern edge of downtown sector of the city. But many visitors to Oaxaca prefer a more picturesque and traditional to Americanised accommodation somewhat sterile yet can not rationalize the cost and Camino Real Hotel or Los Laureles, impressive in its own right.
Most of the hotels smaller family owned and operated B & Bs and guest houses do not have pools, but should not be dismissed out of hand. Some have reached agreements with nearby hotels for their guests grouped to attend.
Each accommodation must be able to identify alternatives to a pool in a place like the water parks located along the roads enter the city. These facilities include swimming pools of different sizes and depths, large water slides, and other accessories to keep kids there to the best of the day. A short taxi ride from the center are Las Brisas and La Bamba.
There are two additional alternatives. Consider attending one of several "spa" located about a half hour outside of Oaxaca in the town of Vista Hermosa, catering to entire families rather than mostly children. During hot weather you'll find families and friends around the pool, play volleyball, or sitting under palapas eating a wide variety of local food available the small comedors.
Then there Boil Water, at the end of a tour routes out of town. The site has two large pools fed by bubbling natural hot springs, in a spectacular mountain setting with a petrified mineral "waterfall." Are safe for children, and large enough deep water to meet the aspirations of any adult. Most tourists do not get to Boil Water, probably due to the distance, but in my book is a must for families with children, particularly if done in conjunction with a couple of other stops en route.
Oaxaca is based solely on tourism for their existence, and therefore seeking accommodations welcome children must be tilted to provide families with "little things" such as a chair stroller, crib with accessories, trim, chair for use in your dining room, and a reference for a reliable babysitter who can come to your hotel while you're out for a night. At the time of the Hotel San Felipe provided child care when our pre-teen daughter. If you are looking seriously to be able to find small hotels and cottages guests with similar capacity. If your child can read and the nurse has only a limited knowledge of English, give your child a series of prepared questions and phonetically ten tips [go Bray morning (I have hunger), Dar na arrow key (I want to go swimming).] If your child is too small, the nurse must have the experience to identify pressing issues. All rooms must have an English speaking doctor on call in the unlikely event of illness.
Two children tours of visits
1) Boil Water:
The promise to Boil Water, the end of one of the two main routes tour is the best possible way to keep kids under control during the first half of this day trip. On the way back to Oaxaca This site will be sleeping in the back of the car or van, no doubt, being exposed to too much sun and water activity.
Your morning begins with a stop in El Tule, the tree 2000 years old massive Cyprus. Be sure to get a tour guide boy dressed in a suit of Robin Hood to show you the many images in the trunk, with the help of a mirror. Encourage your children to trade words in English and Spanish with Hoodettes little. One of the keys that have interest of young children is to give them the opportunity to interact with others of the same age ... and provides a good lesson in cultural diversity.
In Teotitlan del Valle, the carpet people, ask your guide to take you to where you can have a demonstration where weavers children and grandchildren will be present. Your children can play, touch the raw wool, try to turn, and even get their hands wet and dyed in large vats of natural plant materials used in the coloring process of the spun wool. While you are looking for a floor covering or Wall Hanging, let the kids look for a piece of fantasy images suitable for your bedroom, or a mini-rug (ie mountain wool) with a form of fantasy. They will spend as much time as you choosing. Our daughter grew up with regular visits Casa Santiago. Sarah looked like she got older, there were always two or three children or grandchildren of Santiago on hand to occupy your time and keep it on the trailer. One of the family Santiago offers a course in the afternoon weaving, suitable for children eight years of age and older, where children can learn and make their own small rug or carpet.
If you travel the route on a Sunday, there is no better place to keep children in the fear that the market Tlacolula ... colors, variety of items for sale, candy, turkeys, live music, street vendors and artisans' market. It takes at least an hour and a half to go through the market, so the dishful promise of ice cream (actually a healthy sorbet called snow), while the market does the trick. One area still has several rooms where you can sit and enjoy a cone or a plate of one of several tropical fruit flavors.
The two main ruins along this route are Yagul and Mitla, the latest, greatest and famous. Each has excavated burial chambers to intrigue the youngest of Tomb Raider. Since it is reasonable to expect children to go to two ruins in one day, regardless of the tactics parenting, I would opt for Yagul. There are two graves that may fall by all. There is a labyrinth in which children can run and get temporarily lost. Children tend to enjoy climbing the steep mountain pass leading to a fortress. At the top is what that archaeologists say is a bathtub carved in stone in which children enjoy the session. Finally, the site should be of interest to all adults, with pre-Hispanic ball game and the valley view from the top of the fortress. It may be blasphemous to suggest, even, but the thought of young children in particular why not save for another trip to Mitla. After all, you're probably going to schlep to Monte Alban, the grandfather of the ruins of the region.
Unless you give up some sites has already been pointed out, probably will not have time to visit the zoo along this road, or feel obliged to. Children can always go to the zoo back home.
Regardless of which of the two roads to take to get to Boil Water, its final destination, you pass goats, sheep and / or cattle being driven, either on the side of the road or in front of you that dictate the performance of stocks. Stop and encourage children to go out with you. Ask if it is safe to jump into the back of one of the beasts, or at least be next to the photo shoot.
There are reliable restaurants both on the road to Boil Water (ie, Doña Chica de Mitla, and on the road in the El Tigre San Lorenzo Albarradas cut) and on the site, but if you tend to be extra careful with children, there are banks in the pools where you can eat your own picnic. Alternatively you can relax and enjoy while you are away sitting on rock outcrops.
Most allow their kids to swim, the greater the certainty that the return trip to the city will be peaceful and relaxing, and above all quiet.
2) arts and crafts more:
San Bartolo Coyotepec provides an attractive principle for a full day of sightseeing. In one of the many workshops, watch a demonstration of the ancient craft of Black Pottery well without the use of a wheel or modern tools. This art must hold the attention of children of all ages. However, for the warranty, ask your guide to take you a study as Doña Rosa, where the Master Don Valente allows children to go to a table near the show and working with the clay itself. As children get dirty hands, while molding, you will learn how to make a bowl of freshly collected mud, water, heat, and little else. Search showroom and select from a wide range of both contemporary and chic, and traditional pieces, while the children look ceramic forms your pets.
In nearby San Martín Tilcajete, some of the workshops producing carved and Painted Wooden animals brilliant allow advance arrangements for their children to select and then paint the animal of their choice, with guidance from one of the owners of the facilities. Once again there is probably an opportunity for children and pursue to pet and play with children their same age.
For lunch, try Azucena Zapotec, on the road at the entrance of San Martín Tilcajete. The food is good, traditional and safe, and the grounds are spacious and include a swing set to care for their children, within the scope of your site, while you dine.
The people of St. Thomas Jalieza is known for producing cotton table runners, tablecloths, napkins, belts and handbags with new original strap loom, and bedspreads and tablecloths with much larger machines. One of the cultural experiences for children in this situation will see how their counterparts 10 years help with old family business and its financial sustainability.
In Ocotlán be dropped by the house of the Aguilar sisters, forming figures with mud painted scenes representing markeplaces, religious imagery, representations of love and comedy festivals of colors. At least one of the workshops in general has a number of painted figures in which each child can express their own creativity.
Finally, a couple of minutes down the road of your family will the opportunity to witness Angel Aguilar Hand Forged knives and forks only recycled metals in a rudimentary stove. The setting is fascinating, primitive, and safe for children. In just a few minutes, before their eyes, angel can record your child's name and a drawing of a memory fantasy knife with a blade 1-inch leather case, and largest registration may be what your child choose.
If you follow this route on Friday, will have the opportunity to stroll through the market Ocotlán, as the Sunday market in Tlacolula, though smaller.
Each of these two routes have extra stops, but this selection highlights particular sites that maximize the experiences that children will remember for a lifetime.
And do not forget the city
Throughout the year many local and international events, with and pageantry, song and dance of colors, some specifically designed for a youth audience in mind. The website http://www.oaxacacalendar.com be consulted before leaving for your trip. In addition to listing weekly events, such as where and when the mariachis and the Oaxaca state band can be heard, as well as data and a number of museums and galleries, specific details of forthcoming events and performances, when the Warriors baseball team will play (a gift for lovers Sport of all ages), fireworks shows and major events.
A Saturday morning hours bilingual children takes place in the lending library Oaxaca ( http://www.oaxlibrary.com ). The library sponsors programs Sometimes additional for children. Since mid-July to mid August there is a summer camp offered in San Felipe for children of all ages and is seasonally and offers similar courses through the Textile Museum. Art classes and music are also available.
Many Spanish language schools have a curriculum child-specific, so if you're thinking of refreshing your Spanish, there is no need to worry about how children will be morning time busy. Casa de la Cultura also offers courses for children. Finally, a number of charitable organizations, where foreign students are given an opportunity to help disadvantaged or struggling to local children.
Talk to your guide or hotel manager for more specific suggestions for children particular age and passions. Youth with a strong interest in the arts may be happy to visit the workshops of a couple of local artists, or maybe go on a alternative travel outside the city that has in the studio of a sculptor, an art factory handmade paper, and the Center for the Arts housed in a 19th century mill. For that have been sensitized to environmental issues or have been exposed to camping and outdoor activities, the family can spend a couple of days in a rustic setting in the Sierra Norte mountain ... Hiking, biking, horseback riding, and learning about how certain industries in the state are making progress in terms of environmentally friendly production.
The options are endless. It's just a matter of doing some homework, asking, and then committing to a holiday dedicated largely to their children. The inevitable rewards include their own memories of the richness of the region and cultural diversity and a greater appreciation of the magic of Oaxaca.
