Collecting antique chess games in the 20th C
Set Antique chess collection
XXI century.
With the Internet now ubiquitous there are opportunities for collectors of all kinds, eg,
e-bay, (a double-edged sword).
Online Auctions (risky unless you can see in person)
Online Reseller, (good, but can be expensive).
Chess Collectors are many choices, increasingly seen in a chess game of antiquities. which are, in no particular order.
Is desirable?
You love me?
Will fit into my collection?
Is it in good condition?
If you can not be fixed, and how?
Can I afford that?
There are many different styles of series available, and many different types collector.
some have a thematic collection, for example, India's games in English, and so on, some states only collect wood, some only in ivory, some collect everything they can find.
So, setting aside personal needs of the individual collector, I will explore what kind of package can reasonably expect to find, where and
How often we could obtain the opportunity to so buy a whole and how, assuming that all is in good condition.
Also, most importantly, it lays down the most desirable for bragging rights "with other collectors. This is an important consideration, no one wants to spend much money for combinations of several years, and then find that everyone else has better, bigger or cheaper to buy the same thing, etc.
Lets start with a decent standard Staunton set, this should be by Jaques, if you have any aspirations to be taken seriously as a collector. However, a collection of sets of Jaques is not valid, see. http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/chesspurr
A signed set in boxwood and ebony with 3 1 / 2 "kings, weighted in the original box with the label, can be considered the requirement minimum, and will cost around £ 800 in 2008.
Borrow or purchase a copy of the monograph Professor Alan Fersht on Jaques sets, so that can see whether what is offered is all right in the box to the right, etc.
http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/Fersht
Buy to a trusted retailer and get a receipt stating exactly what you have bought, whether it be a marriage, you can return it for a refund or exchange.
If you buy e-Bay, or a market stall in Anytown, be prepared for disappointment, with no possibility of any reward.
However, it is possible that with changes in e-bay is proposed feedback system that E-Bay you can buy, (and I say "may") become less problematic.
Above is an example of a superb, top of the range of Jaques Ivory 4 1 / 4 "king post in a rosewood box, a perfect early example, to pay £ 20,000 +. (If ever one)
If you are a real collector "potential" you be drooling by now. If the above chess leaves you cold, stop reading immediately and go to collect garden gnomes, or razors, or something, put one in the garden and use the other.
The picture above shows a reasonably good set Barleycorn, however, the size of the men leaves something to be desired, however, these gentlemen who are "correct" for this set.
Another joint with poor knights are Selenus and cooperation of toys. Germany sets, however, as this is the way that were made there is nothing to do about it.
There is only a general guide to good old game of chess that is readily available, and that is teachers. by Gareth Williams. Contains information on most of the games of chess you can expect to find and quite a few will not, and things Gareth says are accurate as to dates and responsible, etc.
Other previous books are hard to find, or written in a 'foreign' language (Shakpartie durch Zeiten und Welten, 'The Hamburg chess club catalog ") or hopelessly inaccurate, (Keats, World chess pieces), or simply useless (Mackett-Beeson, chess games).
The best place to see on a weekly series, is the Portobello Market in London on Saturday morning.
Otherwise put on auction for online catalogs.
There are occasionally special chess sales in the well-known collectors meet in the flesh, when these are received by Mr. Lucas Honey auctioneers Bonhams.
There are several dealers and collectors of chess online and enter "Antique chess sets" in a search engine will capture most of them.
Mr. Jon Crumiller (chess games Jon ") is prominent among these for several reasons, is a collector, not a trader, and his collection online and updated, in their descriptions are as accurate as you can.
http://www.crumiller.com/chess/chess_pages/jonchess.htm
Distributors are captured as previously valuable resource, but remember that the descriptions can be optimistic, as are prices and discounts can often be negotiated.
To start a game of chess collection without breaking the bank, a good representative collection can be initiated by a couple thousand pounds, and this can be extended to purchases made in two or three years, So it's not beyond the means of most people.
Above is a fairly standard Old English bone whole, should cost from £ 100 depending on size, all under the reign of three inches should be considered too small.
What should I buy first?
Looking first to buy reasonably good examples of sets of easily acquired, are (from again no particular order, and apart from the Staunton pattern already mentioned), skeletal system Barleycorn, Old English, St. George pattern bone, ivory, Burmese, Cantonese Puzzle Ball, ivory and Indian.
A word about collecting antique ivory is probably appropriate here.
collection and not having objet d'art antique ivory is still not illegal to sell or transport, although this is becoming severely restricted, especially in the U.S..
In effect the movement of ivory within and outside Europe and America is banned, there is theoretically CITES certificates can be issued to allow this, but until someone tells the idiots who work at airports and borders that is irrelevant.
The tree huggers responsible for this state of affairs will not stop until all we are prevented from, smoking, drinking, driving and life, will live in a perfect green paradise, but all have died of boredom. You have been warned.
You'll find some sites of dealers who claim that George Washington is put into them, this is because GW property of this set,
Any set that is substantially different from this must not be so described, and indicates the dealer in question is 'fluff' their sets and caution should be exercised before quoting anything said in this place as a fact.
But as these bricks set in contrast with the towers and the urn of the stems, were made in the 18C, but also through the 19c and guess which is which is not easy.
This St. George pattern set previously did not sell at auction, estimated 120 pounds - 160 pounds and is only 55 pounds on the day and therefore has been characterized not sold, but more that possible replacements or other imperfections were not found in the catalog.
This is, of course, only one of the reasons why you should always view and manage the lots are planning to bid on.
This beautiful set of ivory Hastilow would cost around £ 2000 at auction (£ 1700 was the hammer price, and the commission of between 15% -30% can be aggregated according to the auction house in its offer)
nobody is really sure if this style really made Hastilow initiative, but once the name has appeared in print the label tends to stick. (No serious researchers working on these problems and scholarship and moves on knowledge.)
As a very general, very rarely will be offered a set of 18c provides the majority of 19c are really beginning 20c. so exercise some caution in the purchase, however, retailers and Internet vendors are all covered by the same sale of goods act that all retailers are, so be sure to get a receipt to indicate exactly what you have purchased. If more forward is substantially different from those described, can reasonably claim against them (although this is not easy).
China and sets Canton.
hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of these sets were imported into the UK in the 19c. and because the Victorians held in domes glass (mostly) have survived much, so if you like this kind of thing, (not me)
You need not buy the first one offer, one better than another along in a minute.
Apart from Lot 21, sets examples above are quite common, buy if desired, but never buy a game with missing pieces, as you will never find any matching pieces, because these assemblies are made to suit the materials and sizes on hand at the time of making, and always vary slightly from set to set.
Try to buy China sets with well-made pawns, carved into the round, not cut and most were 20c.
The best way to start collecting chess sets, is surf the net, starting with my Picasa site,
http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/chessspy
then move to my site scribd.

As I said earlier, the former chess typing 'set' in the form of your choice, return a sufficient number of points interest to keep you entertained for weeks or months, just do not believe everything you read.
As with any vocation, there are no roads and paths. There are, for example those who only collect signatures famous chess players, and those who are primarily interested in travel groups, etc
My interest personnel become chess pieces, but for anyone with a computer (or access to one), there are enough collectors and dealers online to suit all tastes. Have fun.
Alan Dewey. 2008.
