Cookware cast iron is safe to use after passing by a fire in your home?
Period house recently burned my mother ... solid pine had a car in the lining of interior walls and ceilings. Anything that was not consumed by fire was covered with a mixture of soot black pine and cooking oil that the coating of car. It was a particularly hot fire from his house also had a solid tin roof and held on fire and heat instead of letting it burn out and ventilation. The fire was so hot that even the china plates and earthenware incinerated into dust. Thus, I worry that cast iron was saved could be contaminated. It is porous and worry that may have absorbed the chemicals from the fire that would be at best unpleasant if leaked into the food and at worst, can be poisonous. Can anyone advise me on this?
Cast iron is porous. It absorbs pollutants. What you need to do is to make sure surface is clean. That means heavy washing stations with a rag. If you have a dishwasher, run the pans through several times. After that, I recommend Rust Remover, like naval jelly. Finally, rub all over with vegetable oil, let sit overnight, then wash with water and soap. This type of cleaning is a bit sad because the old iron cookware is generally well-seasoned cast, and it takes many years to do it. Methods I have just described will destroy the seasoning. However, the spice is the part that could contain contaminants. To season the pan again, never use soap in it and cooking oil and rub on the inside before storage. Some people speed up the process by putting the oiled pan on a burner to heat - but not hot enough to burn the oil. I never go through this to save a pan, but I understand why someone would do if all that were saved.
