Shunga, an introduction to a Japanese erotic mystery
Shunga, literally, "Images of Spring" is the generic term used to describe the erotic prints, books, scrolls and paintings From Japan. Â Â
A History
The beginning of the shunga genre is connected with the origins of ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world") and begins with the work of Hishikawa Moronobu and his school between 1660-1670. Originally published as shunga erotic manuals (guides) for most popular courtesan in the pleasure houses. But with prosperity Ofa growth, expansion of brothels Thea in Edo (now Tokyo) and alterations in the Japanese caste system traders get richer, embracing a style of hedonistic life, won more fun shunga Shops in purpose. the Edo pleasure quarters, called the Yoshiwara,  soldiers shunga prints and books as souvenirs to visitors from brothels. During the Meiji period only artists in a few specialized design shunga prints were mainly influenced by Western Art.   Â
The subjects and themes  Â
At first glance shunga image can have a confrontation in the viewer (West) because of the frank the issue has been portrayed or exaggerated representation of the genitals. In the West, one of the shunga publications began in 1975 with the ground-breaking book "shunga The art of love in Japan "by Tom and Mary Evans Hillier's followed by 'Jack of Thea Japanese Art Book 1987. Memorable exposure in 1989 at the Musée © e d'elles ILX-in Brussels, where the most impressive works in the exhibition were the shunga genre also contributed toa renewed interest. In 2005, a unique exhibition was held in Rotterdam Kunsthal Thea called 'Lentelust with timeline view of the art a new publication form. detailed shunga by Gian Carlo Calza Beena has links planned for the spring of 2010.     Â
