Why is there a small piece of Russia between Lithuania and Poland?

I've been wondering why there is little Russia, located between Poland and Lithuania. Why there? What is the history of it?

The region is now called Kaliningrad and is the northern part of the province of German East Prussia until the end of World War 2. Then, Russia occupied the eastern part of Poland (now belonging to Ukraine - "give" parts of Poland German Reich in place, for example, southern Silesia and East Prussia), the three Baltic States and Kaliningrad (until then called Königsberg) area. When the Soviet Union collapsed in sovereign countries kept Kaliningrad Russia, because he could not become a state by itself due to its heritage: never been a sovereign country, but "only" a part of a great state. Certainly, Russia wanted (and want) to keep Kaliningrad is of importance including access to the strategic Baltic Sea - although not directly connected and with the rest of Russia ..
